Newbie - Introduction

Hi

I do almost all recycle art work. Everything from reconstructed clothing and accessories to clocks and artistic expression projects. Right now I'm selling hand made clothing and reconstructed clothing in Austin, TX at Sunset Valley Farmer's Market on Saturdays. Recently I just got offered a gig to vend at a middle school fund raiser – really happy about that. I was given the application from a customer who bought a skirt for her daughter's friend who created Enviro Girl – a environmental activist super hero. She is now an up and coming city celebrity.... maybe.

I also take various found stuffed animals (yard sales & thrift stores) and turn them into back packs.

I don't have a website yet but I do have some pictures I need to upload to Tribe.

Looking for a physical site to sell your wares?

I'm opening a store for crafters and artists to sell their things - clothing, toys, art, music, comics, etc- basically trying to get the unknown and little known names out and about. I'm doing it on a commission basis but with a twist. You set the price you need, i put a small markup on top. You have no costs except shipping to get things to me. I cover rent, utilities, insurance, taxes, display - all the "fun" things people dislike having to deal with. There will be a contact between us; you will need to send me an inventory and I will send you a list of items sold and a check once a month if your items have sold. You will be welcome to send me more things at any time, and experiment - we'll both find out what sells best!

The store is named Ravenglass Gallery and located in Evergreen, Colorado.

If you're interested, contact me through tribes and we'll get started!

Any experience of using bindis for gift decoration?

Last Christmas we had many customers from USA buying bindis for using it as gift decoration. I was keen to have feedback from people who have used it this way.

These little stick-on bindis with various designs and colors, have been traditionally used on the forehead and recently as body decor by belly dancers. Would it also be good for gift decoration?

How Much?

The eternal question.

How much is our work worth?

I am a leather crafter and I always use the best materials available, I hand cut, hand tool and hand stitch every thing I make.

Increasingly I am finding that people are complaining that I am over pricing my work. Unfortunately they seem to be comparing it to mass produced items from third world countries that pay children about half a buck a day to do the work.

I see many crafts people in my area who seem to be resigned to getting less for there work just so they get something.

So what to do?

Should I pay myself like some third world wage slave and skimp on materials and workmanship?

Should I try to find a way to educate the customer as to why I charge what I do?

Should I just resign myself to waiting for that increasingly rare person who seems to appreciate solid hand craftsmanship?

I'm sure some of you have faced this dilemma as well. Any opinions are welcome.

The American Museum of Ceramic Art (AMOCA) in Pomona is calling Southern California raku artists to sell their wares in our museum gift store during our exhibition “Raku: Origins, Impact, and Contemporary Expression” which takes place November 11 – January 6, 2007.

DETAILS:
The emphasis for the pieces accepted into our museum store focus on moderately priced raku items, meaning under $400. Our best sellers tend to be functional items under $75. AMOCA’s commission rate is 35%. Please take this into account when establishing your sale price. All proceeds go to benefit AMOCA’s ceramic art education program. hi, i've been looking for a duvet cover and/or pillows (covers) for my friend in something which is simple, contemporary but with a slight asian feel. she has these wonderful slightly iridescent shantung drapes in different warm colors - amber, burnt orange, darker orange and a chartreuse color. she likes indian sari and thai silks a lot but the mass-produced stuff seems to be cheap-looking, stuffy or just too visually busy.

if any of you can point me to a site (or another more appropriate tribe) to find something along these lines - that would be great.

Question for mod and members

Hi everyone,

Last week I posted, as I usually do, my auctions in several tribe of which I am a member. In another tribe I had some problems with a few of the members there about it. They didn't think that I should post auctions. Someone said I should post my auctions in the listings. I bring this up because I'd like to avoid this problem again. I had to quit that tribe because one of the members was getting nasty. I'd hate to quit this tribe. So what I want to know is if my posts bother you guys to the point where you don't think I should post. If they do would you prefer I post in the listings? Thanks for your input!

So I came back from vacation to discover that about half of my mailing list was somehow deleted! #%&^!!! I have no idea how this happened or how to fix it. I am unable to recover the emails that were lost and my site host doesn't know how it happened either. Big mystery. So I have to ask everyone who was a member of the list a favor: please re-sign up for the mailing list. That is if you want to keep updated with auctions and such as usual. And of course, I occasionally do "mailing list only" sales and contests. So now I have to go post this everywhere I can think of to try to get those 75 members back. *sigh*

Hi! I am very interested in learning to make kanzashi. I am going to be a geisha for Halloween and making kanzshi looks pretty difficult so I want to get some practice time in. Does anyone know of any sites that have tutorials? I already googled it and found nothing, so no need to offer that advice. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Help! Lost my job before it started. Tribe

I'm a live-in Caregiver and such a job can sometimes be unreliable. I was just hired to work for/live with a person and suddenly they were hospitalised. So no more job (Boo Hoo :-(

My Family has been really good about helping me out. My mother and I have been trying to make ends meet with the help of my grandparents and friends. I figure that tribe.net is like an extention of my family so I feel comfortable enough to

(My items are priced at $3-100- Most of my jewelry/gift items are $9-16)

I also have a selection of Garage Sale items inc: Stuffed Animals, Knick-Knacks, Collectables, Clothing, A great Acoustic Guitar with Gig-Bag and extra strings, A small TV, futon mattresses, and much more...

Tracey your candle holders are awesome! What gauge wire did you use? Was it hard to shape/cut? I have used wire before - but it is generally 22 or 24 gauge.... never anything so thick. great work!!!

You may - or may not - know that Tribe allows Tribesters to make banner ads for our Tribes. Since we have a nice sampling of artists and goodies I thought it would be great to create a banner alerting people that we have lovely handmade gifts - just in time for Valentines day, and encourage people to look at the jewelry and other items in the photos and contact the artists for purchase.

However I am a lousy graphic artist. Does anyone has the skill and the time for this?

Hand made craft vs. merchant of goods

The other day someone posted a thread and photos to sell some dolls that were obviously not hand made items. This caused an interesting dialoge.

I have to say, I really want to promote "us" as supportive artisans who have alot of pride in our workmanship. From the beautiful work that has been posted to the photos, it looks like that has been the case.

I know when I create something it may take me anywhere from a couple of hours to several days to complete. Hopefully that comes across in my pieces. I am proud to be included and promote similarly talented people.

But does that mean we should shut out others who sell manufactered goods? Or only some that meet some standard? If so, how is it decided?

So? Whatcha think?
